Victims have been shortchanged before.

Victims from prior storms dating back to Tropical Storm Allison in June 2001 have logged complaints with FEMAINFO.US. They consistently say that they have yet to receive their full compensation, or in some cases any at all, from their insurance carriers and FEMA. In each case, their troubles started by not fully understanding what they were entitled to receive.

In most cases victims believed that their adjuster worked for their insurance carrier. They were unaware that most catastrophe adjusters are independent contractors working for a third-party adjusting firm. They did not understand that all property insurance carriers selling flood insurance have a cooperative relationship with FEMA and views FEMA as a business partner.

In many cases victims believed if they complained about their treatment in regard to their flood or wind claim their insurance carrier would treat them worse or not pay them at all. The reports we have received from victims in 16 states proves otherwise.

Carriers cannot sell their products so easily if their image is shattered. Like shining a light on a problem, often as soon as a victim’s plight is publicized by the media, significant action comes from their insurance carrier.
